A. No. While it may be tempting to try a different screw in a Kreg Joint, there are many reasons why you shouldn't. Kreg screws are specifically designed for use with Kreg Joints and include many features which make them uniquely suited for use with the technique.
In order to minimize splitting of the wood, our screws use auger-point self-tapping tips which bore their own hole as they are driven. This eliminates the need to drill a small hole in the receiving workpiece before the screws are driven, and keeps your wood from splitting.
Varying Thread Type
Different materials require different thread-type. Our screws come in three distinct styles (coarse, fine, and hi-lo) for use with different wood species. Fine thread for hardwoods such as oak and cherry, coarse for softer woods such as pine and MDF.
All Kreg screws feature a high-quality square head designed to reduce the chance of your driver slipping once engaged.
Unlike other screws which heads may snap off when being tightened down, our screws are made from a high-quality high-tensile steel designed to withstand the unique stresses within Kreg Joints.

The only thing that will change when you use different types of wood, will be the screw type. For hardwoods, such as Oak, Cherry, Maple, use a fine threaded screw. For softwoods, such as Pine, MDF, Alder, use a coarse threaded screw.
